The City of Santa Clarita has a part-time/seasonal (PTS) position available in the Recreation and Community Services division. The Youth and Family Programs team is seeking a highly motivated individual with strong interpersonal skills to assist with the planning and implementation of programs and to work directly with part-time seasonal staff, youth, and families in seasonal and year-round offerings.

Under the leadership of the Community Services Supervisor, this position will work primarily with the Neighborhood Engagement programs. These programs provide youth and families with a variety of year-round resources, development workshops, employment opportunities, preventative programs, seasonal events, and volunteer opportunities. Other activities include sports, arts and crafts, field trips, water games, and more!

This position may work up to 20 hours per week, 999 hours a year and is based on the needs of the program; Monday through Friday and will include some nights and weekends.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Organizes, plans, and works directly with leadership staff to implement the Neighborhood Engagement Program and prepare activities for youth and teens that make the program fun!

• Supervises and leads youth and teens in activities such as arts and crafts, games, sports, water activities, and outings

• Attends, participates, and supervises youth and teen field trips – Yes, you get paid to go on field trips!

• Maintains youth and teen safety

• Assists in organization, set-up, and clean-up of facility during special events and meetings – We all pitch in as a team.

• Greets patrons and participants and answers inquiries regarding programs

• Effectively addresses issues and concerns with youth and teens – Be prepared to handle some tough stuff, we will be there to support you!

• Performs first aid and responds to emergencies; reports incidents and accidents

• Attends meetings and training sessions

• Follows and enforces City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others – Safety first! Fun second!

• Other duties, as directed by Community Services Supervisor, Coordinator, and/or Recreation Leader III/II

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED equivalent

• Six months of paid or volunteer experience in leading and planning activities for youth and teens in a recreation, education, child care program, after-school program, camps, or other relatable setting

• Completion of college courses is highly desirable

• Bilingual in English/Spanish highly desirable

Knowledge and Abilities

• Ability to act as a role model by displaying positive and courteous behaviors that youth and teens will admire and want to emulate

• Ability to maintain awareness of participant's needs and respond appropriately

• Ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and positively, both verbally and in writing with people of diverse backgrounds

• Strong team player and the ability to work both independently and as part of a work group

• Basic familiarity with technology (For example: setting up a laptop and speakers, ability to use Microsoft Word, Canva, Adobe, etc. )

• Strong customer service skills and the ability to handle conflict, issues, and concerns with youth and teens as they arise

• Ability to observe safety principles, make sound decisions, and “think outside the box” to solve problems while in the field

• Strong work ethic, proactive, and the ability to learn quickly

• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and environments, including inclement weather and in a pool

• Ability to work flexible hours

• Ability to lift, drag, and push supplies and equipment weighing 25 pounds or more is required occasionally (For example: tables, chairs, water-balloon buckets, snack bins, and first aid backpacks)

As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100-3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.

In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.

Part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 999 hours.
