Description/Duties & Responsibilities
This position is responsible for leading and performing semi-skilled and skilled laboring tasks in the maintenance, construction, and repair of City facilities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Performs semi-skilled and skilled laboring tasks in the maintenance, construction, and repair of City buildings, park facilities, and playgrounds; generates, prioritizes, assigns, and completes work orders; determines materials and tools needed to complete work orders; leads and performs custodial work as needed
• Performs a variety of maintenance, repair, painting, masonry, diagnostic, carpentry, plumbing, locksmith, and electrical repairs; inspects the conditions of buildings and structures and reports needed repairs and unsafe conditions
• Performs daily maintenance tasks, which may include opening, cleaning, and restocking bathrooms; prepares facilities for meetings and special events; builds and repairs office furniture and equipment
• Identifies problems and performs repairs to City facilities relating to carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, painting, roofing, and mechanical systems
• Performs and oversees maintenance and repairs on pool equipment, including plumbing and electrical components
• Responds to emergency requests for facility and equipment repairs
• Inspects and evaluates the work of maintenance contractors; trains, educates, and mentors lower level maintenance staff
• Creates purchase orders to purchase parts, equipment, and supplies; works with vendors to research and develop cost comparisons; monitors and maintains supply levels
• Maintains the existing Preventative Maintenance Program to promote and ensure the ongoing safe operation of facilities, pools, playgrounds, and infrastructure
• Establishes positive working relationships with City staff and the public
• May be required to respond to overtime calls after hours, on weekends, and holidays and/or work a full weekend (Saturday and Sunday) schedule if needed
Education and Experience
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• Two years of experience in maintenance and repair of facilities
• Graduation from a related trade school or apprenticeship program is desirable
• Valid Class C California driver license and a safe driving record
Knowledge and Abilities
• Knowledge of current building codes, installation techniques, and mechanical systems and the ability to apply this knowledge to the maintenance and repair of City facilities
• Knowledge of building plans and mechanical drawings and the ability to understand and apply them to the maintenance and repair of City facilities
• Strong technical skills and the ability to perform plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC maintenance and repairs
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify maintenance problems, troubleshoot, and resolve maintenance and repair issues relating to equipment and infrastructure, including three-phase electrical equipment (motors, lighting, HVAC equipment)
• Strong leadership skills and the ability to assist in the training, education, and mentoring of lower level maintenance staff
• Strong project management skills and the ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously, be sensitive to deadlines and changing priorities, and work within the constraints of the budget
• Strong customer service skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the public
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
• Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with City staff, contractors, and the public
• Strong work ethic and the ability to present self professionally and uphold the City’s high standards of ethics
• Ability to use all types of power and hand tools related to the building maintenance trade
• Ability to observe safety principles and work in a safe manner
• Ability to be exposed to extreme weather conditions and solutions or chemicals commonly used in the building maintenance industry
• Ability to perform physical labor, including bending, squatting, and lifting of up to 50 pounds regularly, and up to 80 pounds occasionally

As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency. Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.
This position is covered by an existing collective bargaining agreement between the City of Santa Clarita and Service Employees International Union, Local 721, AFL-CIO. If selected for this position, the employee will be bound by that agreement and may be responsible for paying applicable union dues. A copy of the Memorandum of Understanding will be provided upon hire.
Compensation includes enrollment in California Public Employees’ Retirement System as a replacement for Social Security plus a competitive benefits package. All appointments are made at step 1 of the salary range unless otherwise authorized by the City Manager.
